He said that moderation was a virtue taught in Islam which should be instilled in all segments of the society, especially the younger generation of all races.

“Muslims should remind themselves about the philosophy behind Ramadan, the value of abstinence that teaches us to open our hearts to share and care for those in need,” he said when officiating at the Saberkas-Bernas Jerayawara Bubur Lambuk in the Waterfront Esplanade yesterday.

Organised in conjunction with Ramadan, the joint community initiative between the Saberkas and Bernas is spread across 20 locations throughout Sarawak.

“It is important to nurture such values among the younger generation to remind them about the needy in the community, and that we should help and appreciate them as well.

“We hope that through this activity, the younger generation can pick up and practise all the good values of sharing responsibility and accountability towards our community,” he added.

Abang Johari, who is also Housing Minister and Saberkas president, said the community initiative also reflected unity in diversity among the people of Sarawak.

“Saberkas members from six branches comprising Malays, Chinese, Dayaks and Indians have come together to organise this programme in collaboration with Bernas.

“Our efforts show that Sarawakians irrespective of race and religion can work together in any situation,” he said.

At the event, they distributed some 800 packets of porridge as well as rice and household items to 20 poor families in and around the city.

Bernas contributed RM30,000 for this year’s programme which is into its 11th year.

It is targeting to distribute 24,000 packets of porridge for the needy during the programme statewide that will end in Lawas.

The programme was also organised in Marudi and Limbang yesterday while other areas to benefit from the programme include Petra Jaya, Asajaya, Bekenu, Dalat and Sadong Jaya among others.

A political secretary to the chief minister and Saberkas women chief Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Pantai Damai assemblyman and Saberkas secretary general Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and India Street Pedestrian Mall Committee chairman Dato Wee Hong Seng were among those present.
