KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists found guilty of driving on the emergency lane of highways will be slapped with a maximum fine of RM300, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said enforcement priority was given to those who misused the emergency lane.

“From our experience, it is difficult to carry out rescue work should there be an accident,” he told reporters at the launch of Op Selamat 5/2014 in conjunction with Aidilfitri, here yesterday.

He said Op Selamat 1/2012 statistics recorded 17,937 road accidents, of which 226 cases were fatal involving 243 deaths.

In comparison, fatal accidents for two operations during Aidilfitri showed a 9.7 per cent increase, he added.

“However, the number of accidents has dropped 0.6 per cent in 2013,” said Khalid. — Bernama
