KUCHING: DAP Singai service centre at Kampung Sagah is now being upgraded into a community centre.

DAP Tasik Biru chairman Mordi Bimol said, “This year, we are upgrading our service centre in Singai into a community centre. The main objective of this community centre is to help to improve the living standards of rural communities in terms of economic, social and politics.

“In future, DAP Tasik Biru will expand its community centre to other zones such as Jagoi, Bau, Stungkor and Lundu-Sematan. Singai is our first zone as we already have a place,” he said yesterday.

He explained the DAP Singai service centre then was its first centre in Mas Gading parliamentary constituency, and was launched in 2012, a year after Mordi Bimol was announced as a potential candidate.

He stated that DAP Tasik Biru has implemented activities such as Rural Economic Enhancement Program (REEP), cultural, entertainment and recreational programmes, and others.

Under REEP, DAP Tasik Biru has organised five handicraft workshops in the villages under Mas Gading and also oyster mushroom course in the past four months.

“Our target is to recruit local folks who want to participate in our community project especially single parents, poor families, and fulltime housewives.

Through this project, each participant can earn a side income of at least RM300 per month, depending on their effort. In the coming six months, we are going to build a mushroom and handicraft house in one of the villages which have been identified but yet to be confirmed,” he said.

Also in the pipeline is setting up of a Mini Bidayuh Cultural Centre on the same piece of land belonging to DAP member Dominic Daon.

DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen is scheduled to officiate the launching of the DAP Singai community centre tomorrow (July 27).

Members of the public are also invited to attend, since the DAP Tasik Biru Gawai Open House will also be held concurrently. Mordi said official invitations have also been sent to several travel agencies.
