Miri council pays respects to victims of three air disasters

MIRI: Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai yesterday led councillors and council staff to observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the victims of three air disasters.

The three air tragedies involved Malaysia Airlines MH17, Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways and Air Algeria flight AH5017.

“Miri City Council joins the world in grief and offers its heartfelt condolences and prayers of comfort to the family members and friends of the 298 passengers and crew of MAS flight MH17 that was shot down in Ukraine on July 17,” said Lai before the start of the full council meeting.

He added that the council and its members fully supported the motion that was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the special Dewan Rakyat sitting on Wednesday with regard to this incident.

The motion, which was unanimously endorsed, was to condemn the inhumane action of shooting down the Boeing 777 in east Ukraine.

The Taiwan TransAsia Airways turboprop plane crashed during a thunderstorm at Penghu Island, west of Taiwan on Wednesday, leaving 47 people dead and 11 injured.

Air Algeria flight AH5017, which was carrying 110 passengers and six crew members, crashed in Mali early Thursday morning.
