MIRI: The body of an Indonesian fisherman, who went missing last Saturday, was found in Brunei waters on Thursday by the country’s marine police.

Awie Salma, 30, is believed to have fallen off a fishing vessel berthed about seven nautical miles off Miri waters.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee confirmed yesterday that his counterparts in Brunei had informed him of the discovery.

“The body has been brought to Brunei’s hospital for a post-mortem,” he said.

Awie was among six crew members on board the fishing vessel, which had left Kuala Baram jetty around 10am.

They only realised he was missing when the skipper and his crew gathered for dinner at nightfall.

A police report was lodged by their employer at the Lutong police station on around 9pm that night.

Acting on the report, a search and rescue operation began on Sunday.
