Unspoken facts about the HR Department

0

THE Human Resources Department plays a very important role in an organisation. Its responsibilities include filtering and selecting the right personnel who meet job scopes, setting and implementing the rules and regulations of the organisation, monitoring the discipline and behaviour of employees, taking care of the benefits and compensation of employees, planning the growth and career path of employees, etc.

In short the department deals with everything that involves employees. To work well and maintain a good relationship with Human Resources, you have to be aware of certain facts about the department.

HR works for the company

No doubt the whole existence of the Human Resources Department is for employees. However, the department is formed for the management and administration of human resources.

It is there to provide assistance and solve any issues for employees, but the goals of the organisation have to come first. Hence, whenever personal goals clash with organisational goals, the department needs to be responsible to ensure that the organisation’s goals or interests take precedence.

No secrets

Whatever you disclose to Human Resources, do be aware that the department is under no obligation to keep it a secret. If the information poses some form of harm or threat to the organisation, or if it affects the organisation’s interests, Human Resources is bound to share the information with management.

Hence, if you do not wish for anyone to know about the secret, it is best not to share it. You have to constantly keep in mind that the Human Resources Department functions for the organisation and not for individuals and hence, it is accountable to management.

Same treatment for all does not exist

For better management, each employee will not receive the same benefits and compensation. The salary package is based on the individual’s merit and performance.

Human Resources will segregate employees according to their abilities and performance. The department will assess employees’ achievements and decide on the training, promotion, incentives and salary increments accordingly.

Hence, if you feel that you are not getting due reward or opportunities, you have to produce proof of achievements to support your claim in order to gain what you feel you deserve.

Maintain a positive image and relationship

The impression Human Resources has of you has a great impact on your progress in an organisation. Hence, make sure that you always present a positive image and maintain a good relationship with the department.

Do not feel that Human Resources is pro-management or anti-employee. On the whole, the department is there to help employees and ensure that they get proper and fair treatment.

Human Resources takes care of employees’ interests and handles all the administrative duties. The department looks after the growth of employees by planning training programmes for them. It looks into the needs of each department and assists with human resource planning.

It is only when employees violate the organisation’s rules or affect the organisation in a negative way, that the department has no choice but to take action to protect the organisation’s interests.

Appreciate the department’s efforts

Always appreciate Human Resources for the department’s efforts. The department constantly has to handle all kinds of complaints and grievances from all sides and has to deal with all sorts of issues concerning employees.

Hence, understand the role of Human Resources well and cooperate with the department so that you will have a harmonious working relationship with the staff.
