KOTA KINABALU: Seven houses and a car were destroyed in two separate fires in Petagas and Kepayan here yesterday.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel putting out the fire at Kampung Peringatan in Petagas yesterday.

The fire at Kampung Peringatan, Petagas made a family of six homeless when a fire destroyed six wooden houses.

The 6.40pm fire was believed caused by an electric short-circuit from one of the houses and spread quickly as most of the affected houses were built close to one another.

Fire and Rescue Services Department public relations officer Senior Assistant Superintendent Mohd Affendy Ramin said a distress call was received at 6.45pm and four fire engines with 24 personnel were deployed to the scene within minutes.

“We managed to control the fire by 8pm while the whole operation ended about an hour later,” he said when contacted yesterday.

In the fire at Kampung Souk Batu in Kepayan, a double-storey house and a Honda Charade car parked in the garage went up in smoke.

The fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical short-circuit around 2pm.

Mohd Affendy said a distress call was received at 2.15pm and two fire engines with 18 personnel were deployed to the scene.

“We controlled the fire by 2.30pm and the whole operation ended about an hour later,” he said yesterday.

Mohd Affendy added that no casualty was reported in the two fires while their actual causes and total losses were still under investigation.
