Be models of unity, Islamic bodies told

KUCHING: Local Islamic agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) ought to set a good example in establishing mutual understanding and fostering closer ties among the Muslim community.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said efforts towards achieving unity should start with good relationship between staff of Muslim agencies and NGOs before becoming an example for the community.

“As organisations which play a role in ensuring unity among the Muslim communities and other races in the state, they must first have good relationship among themselves.

“Apart from that, there’s no denying that mutual understanding between Muslim agencies are crucial in driving the religion of Islam towards excellence in Sarawak,” he said.

Speaking at the Harakah Islamiah (Hikmah) and Islamic agencies/NGOs Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri celebration at Dewan Hikmah here recently, Daud called on these agencies to closely work together in implementing programmes related to the tranquillity of Islam.

He also pointed out that they should be creative in organising religion-related programmes in rural areas.

“The Muslim community in rural areas need programmes of religious approach which can strengthen knowledge in regards to Islamic religion.

“In view of this, I would like to take this opportunity to call on each of these agencies and NGOs to participate in the organisation of such programmes,” he said.

The celebration saw some 17 Islamic agencies including banks participating in the annual event organised by Hikmah which aims at fostering closer ties among the staff of these agencies/NGOs throughout the state.

Also present were deputy state secretary and Hikmah deputy president Datu Misnu Taha, former Semariang assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Mordiah Tuanku Fauzi, Sarawak Islamic Council president Datu Putit Matzen and Tabung Baitumal Sarawak general manager Datu Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie.
