SHOAW win sudden-death thriller

KUCHING: SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab (SHOAW) won their first KRFC Under-15 Rugby Carnival Cup held in conjunction with the Kuching Festival yesterday.

Fighting tooth and nail for the title, they had to come from behind to edge Kolej Abdillah 12-7 in the final.

With both teams tied 7-7 at the end of regular time, the SHOAW boys scored in the sudden-death decider.

A relieved head coach Zulkaranainhisham Sarbini said it was a title to savour.

“We wanted to win this title so bad but we were up against very formidable opponents like Kolej Abdillah. I am glad that we were made to work hard for this win as our victory was made sweeter by it,” he commented.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was present to witness the match and gave away the prizes. Held for the third time since 2012, the competition was a sevens tournament jointly organised by the Kuching City South Council (MBKS) and Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC).

SMK Tebedu and SMK Hajah Laila Taib (last year’s winner and formerly known as SMK Asajaya II) were previous winners of the tournnament.

A total of 10 schools teams from Kuching and Samarahan divisions participated in the tournament held at the Song Kheng Hai rugby ground.
