Bride-to-be runs away during lunch

SIBU: It was virtually a case of a runaway bride when a 23-year-old woman who planned to wed this yearend went missing after going to the toilet in the middle of her lunch with her fiancé on Sunday.

The maiden from a Selangau longhouse never returned, and after a long wait, the fiancé checked the toilet and found the woman he wanted to marry had gone missing.

Taking the episode as a silent farewell, the man then told the woman’s father before both of them went to the police station to lodge a missing person’s report.

The woman’s father, Johnathan Nan, called on the public to inform him at 014-8885142 if they had news of his missing daughter.

Recalling the incident, the father said his daughter and her fiancé had earlier gone to Saratok to visit his other daughter for a three-day stay.

He said on Sunday the couple went to the Central Market here for lunch during which his daughter went missing.

In a reverse case, a man here ran away after finding his girlfriend had become pregnant.

He claimed that the child the 15-year-old was bearing was not his although he had had an intimate relationship with her.

The girl is a school drop-out after completing primary 6.

She and the 23-year-old man were both from Kanowit.

Moving to Sibu recently, both the man’s family and the girl’s family rented houses at Lai Chee Lane.

With the houses close to each other, police believe this had given the girl and the man an opportunity to start an intimate relationship.

Thinking that his daughter had stomach ache, the father took her to hospital, where he was
shocked when told that she was pregnant.

The girl admitted she had a relationship with “the man next door”.

The father then lodged a police report.

When her lover learnt that the affair had got the attention of the police, he immediately packed and left.

The police are now looking for him.
