KUCHING: In an effort to eradicate dengue cases in the city, the Kuching Chinese Community Leaders Association held a cleaning campaign at the Kuching Municipal Council (KMC) Lingga and Belaga Flats yesterday.

Led by its chairman Temenggong Lu Kim Yong, more than 10 community leaders were on hand to lend a helping hand in the campaign organised in collaboration with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the State Health Department.

“The moment we learned about two dengue cases at Lingga and Belaga flats here from the Ministry of Health, we decided to act immediately to prevent further recurrence,” he told reporters when met at the campaign.

“It is unfortunate that there are still ongoing dengue cases here. Kuching is our home and it is the responsibility of each and every resident of the city to exercise their duty to keep it clean at all times.”

Lu, on behalf of MBKS and the State Health Department, also called on all KMC Flats tenants and the public to work together to combat dengue.

“Everybody can play a role, especially adults who should always lead by good example to keep our surrounding clean for the children to emulate.

“We should not rely entirely on the councils or health departments as it is our initiative and action that can help to combat the outbreak of dengue in our country,” he stressed.

One of the prevention methods to banish breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, he said, was to throw away any excess water in flower pot trays or in containers that may collect water, on a weekly basis.

“The council is also seeking public cooperation not to throw rubbish, bottles, containers, or plastic into drains as this can cause blockage and result in stagnant water which will indirectly create a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” Lu advised.

Prior to the cleaning campaign here, the association previously carried out campaigns at Chonglin Park, Jalan Green Hill, Jalan Abell, Jalan Song, Padungan and Tabuan Jaya areas.
