According to organising chairwoman councillor Julia Juwen, the meeting was the party’s way of reaching out to youth bodies and educate them on the significance of Independence to the country and state.

“Many Sarawakians sacrificed their lives fighting the British and Japanese, as well as the communists during the Emergency, for the sake of freedom – one that we all should always treasure,” she said, stressing that today’s youths must know the history and struggles of their forefathers.

“A good example would be the Sarawak Rangers, whose members including (the late) Datuk Temenggong Kanang Langkau had bravely fought the communists.”

Meanwhile, Teras Miri spokesman James Joshua said observing National Day was equally important as Malaysia Day (Sept 16). “Both occasions are important dates that we in Sarawak should take note of.”

On the Merdeka Lunch, James viewed it as a good get-together session that could serve as a platform to reach out to local youngsters.

“With Teras being a new political entity, their (youths’) attendance reflects the willingness on their part to be associated with us, which is a good starting point for us in Miri.

“We hope to organise more of these informal gatherings and forums,” he said, adding that the party also extended invitation to big bike owners from Brunei.
