SIBU: Nine teams of 63 players took part in a futsal tournament last week hosted by My Centre, a youth organisation of the Methodist Church, at the multi-purpose sport court at Tekam Road.

The youth organisation was set up for community building to steer youths away from social ills.

They have so far hosted various social and recreational activities, and the promotion of the futsal game is one of their activities.

A spokeswoman said the teams in the three-day futsal competition held since last Wednesday were for youths aged 12 to 30.

Among them was a team from Permai residential estate.

“My centre has been set up for a few years. This year, we have hosted programmes like cosmetics and hairstyling course, classes in the art of self-defence, sports activities, course on organic soap-making and others.”

She said it was useful for young people to pick up a hobby to stay away from drug abuse and other social ills.

“We should host activities to bring them together for social activities.

“Response has so far been overwhelming. We hope more young people will join us to build a moral and healthy society.”

The spokeswoman said they had also been working in partnership with the Youth and Sports Office here.

She said the office had built the multi-purpose sport facility at Tekam Road and My Centre had adopted it for management.

“This is where we host our annual futsal game. The court is suitable for playing basketball, sepak takraw and futsal.”

Terance Tan of the Youth and Sports Office gave away the prizes. He also presented a futsal ball for the three-day tournament.
