Sibu Hospital homes in on young people for blood supply

SIBU: Sibu Hospital is targeting young people to donate blood as well as to help promote blood donation to ensure a steady stream of regular donors. According to its director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, they would soon visit schools to promote the programme. She noted at present, the hospital was dependent on weekend campaigns.

“We are targeting students in Form 5 and 6, where the information of blood donation will be disseminated to them.

“Being able to donate is a privilege as it can help save lives. So, we want to expose the students to such noble activity at an early age.

“Even, if they cannot donate, they can still pass on the information to their friends or relatives, getting them to come forward to donate for a good cause,” Dr Ngian told The Borneo Post.

She opined that this was a good way to get more people to come forward to donate. She was met at Kelab KTS Sibu’s blood donation drive at Star Mega Mall here recently. She mentioned disseminating accurate information would help dispel the fear of donating among some people.

According to Dr Ngian, there are a lot of donors here, but not many are regular. She explained that regular donors are those donating twice or more in a year. A person could donate four times in a year, she added.

“It is difficult to get donors during the festive month.” Hence, she hoped the various organisations in the central region would be more active in carrying out drives to ensure adequate supply of blood.
