SIBU: A sea of people thronged Kanowit Waterfront despite the blazing afternoon heat to watch Kanowit Regatta 2014 on Saturday.

The regatta was the highlight of Kanowit Festival 2014.

The long boat race, speed boat race and F2 powerboat race were among the action-packed events held throughout the day.

Held from Sept 18 to yesterday, Kanowit Festival 2014 was

declared open by Assistant Minister of Tourism (Events and Products), Datuk Gramong Juna.

Also attending the regatta were Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James

Masing, Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) deputy president Datin Catherine Gramong, Kanowit MP Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, Ngemah assemblyman Alexander Vincent and wife Susan Clement, political secretary to the chief minister Maurice Giri, Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee, Kanowit district officer Katis Noel Nyabong and Kanowit Festival organising chairman Cr Benjamin Angki Kaboy.

Besides the regatta, stalls selling a wide array of items including the unique Iban traditional costumes and musical instruments, food and drinks as well as barbequed poultry products such as chicken wings were set up to add merriment to the festival.

The racing boats rev up at the starting point after the flag-off.
