MIRI: A 14-year-old school boy drowned while bathing at a man-made lake near the new Taman Tunku road at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Firemen and curious onlookers at the lake where the boy was later found drowned.

The remains of the Form 2 student, Mohd Syafiq Amirul Abdul Rahman, were located after Miri Fire and Rescue Department’s scuba divers searched for him for about 12 minutes in the about four-metre deep lake.

It is learnt the victim’s younger brother had told their parents at about 1pm that Mohd Syafiq had gone to the lake, about 500 metres from the road, alone.

He was said to have gone there to bathe as his yellow t-shirt, red towel, and a blue sling bag were found hanging on a tree near the lake.

Fearing for his safety, Mohd Syafiq’s parents went to the lake to look for him, but they only saw his slippers by the lakeside.

During the search operation, the area was packed with curious residents.
