KUCHING: The first batch of Malaysian students from the University of Southampton Malaysia campus enjoyed a warm and welcoming reception for their studies at Britain’s south coast.

The students from Kuching and Miri at University of Southampton.

The group of 20 will embark on the final two years of their Masters of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering, and their arrival was enriched with a series of campus and city tours, induction talks and social activities to prepare them for their life and studies in Southampton after two years at the EduCity@Iskandar in Malaysia.

Student Alan Tan was excited to be in the UK and had a good first impression of Southampton from his first few weeks in the city.

“I like it here. It’s very green with lots of trees and grass and is very clean. It’s quite busy compared to my hometown but everyone seems to be very friendly and very open. I’m looking forward to making many new friends for my study group as I mingle with them,” he said.

Fellow student Yong Hau Kit reiterated his sentiments, describing the city as “peaceful”.

“We were given a tour of the facilities and the classrooms so I’m pretty hyped up about starting classes and getting things done. It’s very interesting here in Southampton especially meeting students from different faculties and places,” he said.

The students from the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus had earlier completed the first two years of their studies in Malaysia. They will now complete their degrees in Southampton with access to the University’s world class staff and facilities including the RJ Mitchell Wind Tunnel.

In the next few years, they will be joined by students from the Malaysia Campus who will complete their MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Aeronautics and Astronautics.

“We are excited to have the first group from our Malaysia Campus here in Southampton. This is a great moment and milestone for our students and our University as we extend the reach of our world leading education and research whilst providing a direct channel for students to come to Southampton from around the world and share the great student experience that we offer here in the UK,” remarked the university’s pro-vice chancellor (International) Prof Mark Spearing.

University of Southampton Malaysia Campus will be holding their counseling session at MMS on Oct 16 from 2pm to 5pm.

They will also hold their Information Day at Imperial Hotel Miri on Oct 19 at Danum 1,
