Wan Junaidi: Laws for ROS registration sufficient for now

KUALA LUMPUR: Provisions in the Registrar of Societies  (ROS) existing law to curb the activities and registration of organisations are sufficient for the moment.

Deputy Home Ministry Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, however, said the ministry would likely study these laws for other provisions.

“Our country practises the concept of democracy based on the Federal Constitution and laws, which gives Malaysia the freedom to establish organisations and carry out activities approved by the registrar.

“When the ROS and police found there is fraud, then action will be taken based on the fraud that they (people) do not adhere to the platform that is registered with the organisation,” he told the Dewan Rakyat sitting here yesterday.

Wan Junaidi was replying to a supplementary question from Shaharuddin Ismail (BN-Kangar), who queried if his ministry proposed to tighten the condition for ROS registration.

Wan Junaidi also said the ministry did not have any records on the number of associations that did not register with ROS as the interested parties did not submit any application to register them.

“Organisations that do not register with ROS will be identified through declaration by the organisation concerned via the mass media, receipt of public complaints, intelligence and various other information received from various quarters,” he said.

To curb group activities that might interfere with the legal structure and subsequently jeopardise the country’s harmony, he said the ministry through the police would take ongoing action through three approaches.

The three approaches were through law enforcement under the Sedition Act 1948, enhancing cooperation between non governmental organisations and carrying out awareness campaigns on the dangers of being involved in activities that could trigger racial or religious tension, he said. — Bernama
