KUALA LUMPUR: Front-counter staff, such as cashiers and customer service representatives, should be exposed to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as they are the ones who will mostly be dealing with the customers.

Bumiputera Retailers Organisations (BRO) vice president, Datuk Zahari Omar, said people would want to go to the counters in retail companies if they have any questions to ask on GST, especially about the zero-rated products or standard-rated products.

“We are urging the retailers to also send their front-liners to participate in any GST seminars to prepare them for the tax, which would be implemented next year,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the two-day GST Comprehensive Seminar here yesterday.

Besides helping domestic customers, these front-liners would also help tourists complete their GST claim forms, he said.

Zahari said BRO was talking to its members, including hypermarket chain, Mydin and jewellery retailer Habib Jewel, to put up GST information guides and signages in their premises to educate and give exposure to both the management and customers on GST.

The BRO, formed in December 2013, is a non-governmental organisation aimed at enhancing Bumiputera businesses in various sectors. — Bernama
