SIBU: There will be an early selection for enrolment into Royal Malaysian Navy from 8.30am until 9.30am this Saturday at the Territorial Army 510 Regiment Camp here.

Sarawak Royal Malaysian Navy Veteran Association president Thomas Ling said this was a great opportunity for young people in the state to try for the selection.

According to him, not many Sarawakians are in the navy.

“(Joining the) navy is joining a profession. In the navy, we have many different fields of involvement such as in logistics, as drivers, engineers, rescue personnel, clerks and so forth.

“Whatever profession you have out there, we have them also in the navy. Becoming a navy personnel is great,” he said during a press conference yesterday.

Ling also urged the Chinese to join the navy.

“Among the privileges provided in the navy are free uniforms, free meals and accommodation, free medical treatment and dental treatment, free annual travel warrant with family, incentives to those serving in Sabah and Sarawak, education opportunity, and loan services,” he said.

Those interested should bring along documents such as their identity card, Malaysia citizenship certificate (if any), birth certificate, PMR, SPM, SPMV, and SKM certificates, school leaving certificate (Form 5), co-curricular activities certificates, and other academic certificates.

Applicants should come in sports attire – T-shirt with collar, tracksuit, and sports shoes with socks.

Only those between 18 and 23 years old who are healthy and single may apply.

Those interested must satisfy these minimum criteria. For men – 1.62m in height, weighing at least 47.5kg, with body mass index between 18.0 and 25.0, and chest measurement of about 76cm.

For women – 1.60m in height, 46.5kg (weight), with body mass index between 18.0 and 23.0.
