SIBU: Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has readied aluminum boats at fire stations to brace for possibility of flooding in view of the wet spell.

Sibu Zone Bomba chief Abdul Mutalib Rashid said yesterday that the department was well prepared for any eventuality.

“We have prepared the equipment and the necessary manpower (to face the situation),” he told The Borneo Post.

A king tide lasting for about 10 days was expected from yesterday, with the highest measuring 3.8 metres on Nov 26.

Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sibu chief Ting Sing Kwong has advised residents in low-lying areas here to be vigilant.

Ting said there was a possibility of flooding in these areas if the high tide and incessant rain in upper reaches of Rajang Basin came together.

Meanwhile, Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie revealed that they had formed the Matu district natural disaster committee.

He recalled meetings had been held involving the various government agencies.

“The area in Matu being low-lying is prone to flooding when there is continuous heavy downpour during this time of the year.

“Therefore, it is our fervent hope that the relevant agencies could clear the river and drains to ensure water could flow freely,” Abu Seman, who is political secretary to the Chief Minister, said.

He urged the residents to be vigilant and to inform the district office there if it rains continuously.

“We have made all the necessary preparations,” he said.
