SRI AMAN: Malaysians are a fortunate lot and must count their blessings that their country enjoys political stability, says Senator Datuk Doris Sophia Brodie, who is also Dewan Negara deputy president.

According to her, it is crucial for Malaysians to understand and appreciate the history and how the country was formed.

“By God’s will, our country is free from natural calamities such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, massive floods, tornadoes and wars.

“We also live in peace and harmony because of our political stability.

“Therefore, we must all stand up to defend the meaning of being true-blue Malaysians,” she said at the ‘Program Membara Patriotisme’ organised by state Special Affairs Department (Jasa) at Rumah Mupit, Sungai Besai in Bukit Begunan here yesterday.

Doris also said the people must remind themselves that Malaysia is a country of diversity and therefore, very vulnerable.

“Idealogies on supremacy and extremism must be rejected because if not, then all ‘hell will break loose’.

“In order to live in peace and harmony and have the future of our younger generation assured, we must therefore work hard to preserve what we enjoy now. We must not allow the voice of extremism to fill the air and neither must we allow it to echo into our future,” she stressed.

During the programme, Doris also pledged a grant of RM5,000 to the longhouse Women’s Bureau Fund while Puan Sri Datin Amar Corrine Masing, wife of Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing also handed financial assistance on behalf of Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati) to Isah Legan and Lugok Munan, who are both senior citizens and single mothers, as well as to Bobrie Bujang who is a disabled person.

Also present at the event were Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Research and Marketing) Datuk Mong Dagang and his wife Datin Maria Majeng.
