Traders cry foul: ‘No-table talk’ at Sri Aman market

KUCHING: The Sri Aman District Council (MDSA) has been accused of “bullying” daily traders selling vegetables and jungle produce at the Sri Aman market.

MDSA is reportedly forcing the traders to sell their items on floor mats instead of boxes and tables.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sri Aman chairman Leon Jimat Donald claimed to have received complaints on this matter from the traders.

He also claimed MDSA favoured meat and poultry sellers, who are supposedly “muscling their way” into the agricultural produce trading area.

“They cannot sell their agricultural produce on the floor mats as the veggies will be dirty due to the current rainy season. There doesn’t seem to be a proper system by the MDSA in zoning the traders in the market.

“The council should provide space for the daily traders to keep their tables. Since the MDSA is earning daily rent from the daily traders, the traders cannot understand why the council is unable to provide them with better facilities,” he said.

Leon said he would write to MDSA for an explanation and also seek a solution for the traders.

He claimed that the poor conditions had led to a fight last week over space to trade amongst the daily traders, adding some traders also complained

MDSA had confiscated their tables and boxes to make space for others.
