Two suspected drug addicts collared

The suspects at the police station following their arrest yesterday.

KUCHING: Narcotics police in Padawan near here nabbed two jobless men on Wednesday during an operation targeting suspected drug addicts in the district.

Acting on public tip off, a team from the Padawan Narcotics crime investigation department led by Inspector Muning Jakung detained the first suspect at Kampung Haji Baki in Kota Sentosa around 12.20pm.

A body search conducted on the 26-year-old man found a translucent plastic packet and two straw tubes containing roughly 0.22 grammes of crystalline substance believed to be syabu.

The second suspected addict, a 36-year-old, was picked up from the same area an hour later and found to be in possession of four straw tubes containing similar substance weighing roughly 0.33 grammes. Both men were subjected to urine test and tested positive for syabu.

The suspects, who did not possess any prior criminal record, are being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, imprisonment not exceeding five years, or both if convicted in court.
