SIBU: The Sibu Town Square Phase I is set to be turned into a Christmas Wonderland when the myriad of Christmas trees in all shapes and sizes are lit this Friday.

Sibu Municipal Council secretary Hii Chang Kee said a gigantic Christmas tree measuring 40 feet tall would stand among 20 other trees.

He said the display of the 21 Christmas trees was sponsored by council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King to spruce up the festive mood. The lighting up of the Christmas trees at 7pm will precede the yearly Christmas procession which will be held on Dec 13 this year.

Urging the public to turn up to witness the lighting ceremony, Hii called for restraints on littering and vandalism.

The display of the Christmas trees is organised partly as a competition in which criteria for judging are on creativity, aesthetics, day view, night view and durability. This year, 21 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are taking part. Last year, 21 corporations took part.
