KUCHING: Oriental Dance Arts Association of Kuching (Odaak) will host its inaugural International 2014 Malaysia Open Oriental Dance Arts Competition and Oriental Gala Show on Dec 13.

Its president Jasmine Tan said the international competition attracted 83 participants who would compete under various categories.

“We welcome members of the public and Oriental dance enthusiasts to witness the competition and gala show at MBKS Auditorium,” Tan said at a press conference held at a restaurant here yesterday.

“The international competition will run from 10am to 5pm, while the gala show is schedule to begin at 7pm. The result of the competition will be announced during the gala show, she added.

Tan revealed that response to the competition was very good and participants were from Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Odaak was set up three years ago to promote dance as among the performing arts in Malaysia.

“It’s also to establish and maintain good relations and get affiliated with dance bodies and organisations within and outside Malaysia,” she said.

The competition was open to all citizens under the categories of Amateur Solo (18 years and above) for non-instructors; Professional (18 and above) for instructors and co-instructors; Amateur Group (18 and above) for non-instructors numbering two to eight persons; Fusion (18 and above) for all professional groups, instructors and co-instructors numbering two to eight persons; Kid Solo (seven to 12 years);Teenage Solo (13 to 17 years); Junior Group (five to 13 years old) numbering two to eight persons.

Marks to be given for skills (30 per cent), expression (30 per cent) and 40 per cent for stage performance, costume and overall performance.

Tan said there would also be various winners and awards for participants in the competition and for the first time, the Best Instructor award.

Some 30 participants from the state are entering various categories of oriental dances. These dancers are of international standard.

Participants have to be punctual as the registration counter opens at 9am this coming weekend.

“All participants must register at the registration counter at least an hour before the competition commences. The organiser reserves the right to disqualify any participant without giving any reasons,” she said.
