MIRI: The Nature Awareness Programme held recently at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pulau Melayu was a success with 168 students and 23 teachers participating.

The half-day event was organised jointly by the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri Chapter, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri and Sarawak Forestry Cooperation (SFC) Miri.

Activities carried out included talks on Oriental Pied Hornbill of Piasau Nature Reserve (PNR) by Musa Musbah, chairman MNS Miri and SFC Honorary Wildlife Ranger, while a talk entitled “Our Wildlife” was delivered by Razali Mohamad Shah @ Roslan of SFC. There were mini exhibitions on wildlife in PNR and colouring contest for the students.

SK Pulau Melayu’s senior assistant, Dayang Habibah said the school fully supports the programme and was happy that the organisers had chosen their school for such activity.

“This programme is very useful and informative, providing additional knowledge to both students and teachers. Hopefully this programme could be organised annually at the school,” she said.

Meanwhile, Musa said the programme was part of MNS nature awareness programmes, which will also be extended to others schools in Miri next year.

MNS will continue to collaborate with other government agencies and non-governmental organisations like the Piasau Camp Miri Nature Society and Paws Miri in organising other nature awareness programmes including Hornbill Walk and exhibitions.

Meanwhile, schools interested in conducting nature awareness programmes for their schools could get in touch with Musa at 016-8746127.
