MIRI: Four wooden houses in Masjid Sepupok Niah were destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon, leaving 15 people homeless.

Those houses were located a distance away from one another.

Unfortunately, the strong winds made the fire spread quickly from one house to another.

Two fire engines from Miri and Lopeng carrying 15 firemen rushed to the scene, about 100km from Miri, after receiving a distress call around 1.16pm.

“The fire was brought under control at 1.50pm by six volunteer fire fighters from Batu Niah, who had arrived earlier at the scene,” said Miri, zone fire chief, Law Poh Kiong. Law further said there was no reported loss of life in the fire.

According to sources, most of the houses’ occupants were not in when the fire broke out as they had gone to a wedding reception.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.

Victims are seen with their belongings that they managed to salvage from their razed houses.
