MIRI: Being poor and financially handicapped should not discourage children from pursuing higher education in light of the many channels of aid available nowadays.

Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin, in giving advice to single mothers, said: “It should be the driving force and motivate them to pursue higher education and be successful in life and career in the future. Apart from that, there are a lot of channels for them in getting assistance and help.”

Commending the Single Mothers’ Association here for organising various activities and programmes to assist members and children, Lee, during a presentation of school uniforms, shoes, bags and stationery to 150 students, said through their efforts and initiative, a number of children are now in good professions such as lawyers, engineers and staff nurses.

In this context, Lee urged single mothers who have yet to join the association to register as members as they have a lot to gain from it.

“Since the formation of the association 13 years ago, they have been helping many single mothers and their children in every aspect and bring change to their lives,” said Lee, while commending the association for valiant efforts in the face of adversity.

The association is also able to help members go through proper channels to secure assistance from the government and other organizations.

“A lot of people still don’t know how and where to go when it comes to getting assistance from the government and its agencies. Because of that ignorance, they often feel neglected by the government when they get no help,” he added.

Also present at the presentation was Connie Tang of the Single Mothers’ Association.
