Three welfare bodies host Christmas party for 40 OKUs

MARUDI: It was a grand Christmas celebration for some 40 people with disability (OKUs) at Rumah Ridap Selat in Sungai Pasir near here.

The event, organised by Welfare and Social Committee of Telang Usan Constituency, Eda Beran Long Laput Community-based Rehabilitation Center (PDK) and Baram Visionary Women’s Club, was attended by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

It also held a registration drive for local OKUs who have yet to register with the Welfare Department.

In his speech, Dennis advised longhouse folk whose children or family members are OKUs, to go to PDK Eda Beran Long Laput for registration. According to him, there are about 400 OKUs who have registered with the department.

Meanwhile longhouse chief Ridap Selat had requested for a new building to serve as a teaching premises for the OKUs here.

“At the moment, we are holding the class at our verandah under one supervisor. We hope that YB Dennis could help us on this,” he said.

Guests at the gathering were entertained by the OKUs who performed a medley of Christmas songs, as well as Poco–poco and Ngajat Iban dances.

PDK Eda Beran chairwoman Temenggong Elizabeth Deng, event organising chairperson Mujan Lah, district councilor and community leaders also attended the Christmas do.
