KUALA LUMPUR: Police recorded 21 fatalities in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang while 10 others are still missing following the floods occurring in the three states this time.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said, Kelantan recorded the highest number of fatalities with 14 deaths while four were still missing, followed by Terengganu which recorded four deaths and five missing.

Pahang had three deaths and one missing, he told a media conference after the ceremony to hand over aid contributions for the flood victims involving police personnel at the Federal Police Headquarters in Bukit Aman, here.

He said the police had directed 9,880 officers and men from outside to assist flood victims in the affected states.

“Twenty-four police stations are affected by the floods with 19 stations in Kelantan, four in Terengganu and one in Perak.

“Six police reports have also been lodged involving theft during the floods.

“Police have deployed additional personnel in locations where we expect shop break-ins and so on to occur,” he added.

The number of people evacuated due to floods in Kelantan and Pahang continued to rise, while the number of flood evacuees in Perak, Terengganu and Johor showed a decline yesterday afternoon.

In Kelantan, the number of flood evacuees recorded at 317 relief centres statewide rose to 158,476 people in the afternoon from 142,582 people registered yesterday morning.

According to the Kelantan National Security Council (MKN) spokesman, the victims comprised 39,328 families.

Kota Baharu still had the most victims with 43,558 people taking shelter at 63 relief centres.

Seven other districts hit by the worsening floods in Kelantan were Pasir Mas, which recorded 9,960 evacuees at 35 relief centres, Tumpat, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, Gua Musang, Machang and Pasir Putih, he said.

In Pahang, the number of flood victims at 261 relief centres in eight districts continued to rise to 49,978 afternoon from 49,369 yesterday morning.

Spokesman at the Pahang police contingent flood operations room said Temerloh still recorded the highest number of evacuees with 19,875 at 62 relief centres.

Seven other flood-affected areas in Pahang were Pekan with 9,960 evacuees at 39 centres, Jerantut, Maran, Kuantan, Lipis, Bera and Rompin, he said.

In Perak, the flood situation had shown a slight improvement and the number of flood evacuees dropped to 7,664 people afternoon from 7,735 people recorded yesterday morning.

Perak MKN spokesman said at present, the number of victims in 22 relief centres in Kuala Kangsar stood at 2,050 people from 539 families Monday afternoon.

In Central Perak, the spokesman said a total of 4,515 people from 1,203 families were still taking shelter at 19 relief centres, while in Hulu Perak, two new relief centres had been opened, bringing the total to 14, sheltering 799 people from 215 families.

In Kerian, the number of flood victims at two relief centres remained unchanged at 300 from 90 families.

In Terengganu, the number of people taking shelter at relief centres dropped to 25,775 in the afternoon from 30,652 recorded yesterday morning.

This was because more and more people were allowed to return home after the flood situation in their areas returned to normal.

According to the Terengganu MKN portal, Kemaman still had 15,918 flood evacuees, followed by Dungun, Hulu Terengganu and Kuala Terengganu.

In Johor, 153 people from 43 families were left at relief centres in the afternoon, compared to 171 yesterday morning. — Bernama
