MIRI: Stern disciplinary action will be taken against personnel who leak classified information, particularly on safety and security of the country and army, through social media or other means.

The warning came from the new Ninth Infantry chief Brigadier General Abdul Rahim Sebeli on his first official visit to 20th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) at Kem Sri Miri here.

“As social media is the most effective and fastest way to communicate, including in getting and sharing information, we cannot escape from using it as a mode of communication,” said Abdul Rahim.

As everyone has access to social media, Abdul Rahim said every posting on social media can be read and accessed by many around the globe, not just in the country and region.

“Therefore, it is important for every personnel to be extra cautious and wise in using social media. Make sure that you don’t post and share classified information that may affect safety and security of the country,” said Abdul Rahim, who told them not to simply ‘share’ and post information on the Armed Forces, including its activities.

“There are things that we can share and cannot share with the public. Be wise in using social media as a mode of communication. As you engrossed with it, you might accidently leak out classified information that compromises safety and security of the country,” he added.

Pointing out that he would not take the violation lightly and stern action waits those found breaching security, the Brigadier General also cautioned against posting photographs of themselves or anything that may tarnish the image and reputation of the Armed Forces.

Abdul Rahim also highlighted that as ill-disciplined personnel will affect the whole force, he called on personnel to keep a high level of discipline.

He said they must always be ready and willing to make sacrifices whenever called for duty at anytime and anywhere.

“Although each personnel has his or her respective duty, it is important for everyone to be united in responsibility and not leave it to the commanding officer and above,” he said.

Abdul Rahim also told soldiers to be activity involved in community projects, programmes and activities such as ‘Jiwa Murni’ as they bring the people and Army closer together. It helps the people to know and understand the role played by the Army.

Also present was the 20th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment Kem Sri Miri commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Zamri Othman.
