Tropical storm Mekkhala observed 1,154 km northeast Sandakan: Meteorology department

KUALA LUMPUR: The Meterological Department has observed severe tropical storm, Mekkhala about 1,154 km northeast of Sandakan, Sabah as at 5 am today.

The strong northeasterly winds of over 60 km per hour and rough seas of over 4.5 metres are dangerous to all coastal and shipping activities, including workers on oil platform.

The weather condition is expected to continue until next Tuesday, the department said in a statement today.

Meanwhile widespread thurderstorm is also expected in waters off Sarawak (Kuching, Mukah and Bintulu) and Selangor until late this morning.
