Kota Samarahan, Siburan among areas heavily flooded

KUCHING: Several low-lying areas here and also Kota Samarahan experience flood today following a non-stop downpour since Saturday.

The most affected areas are inundated by more than three feet of water. These are Kampung Sindang, Desa Ilmu, Samaraindah, Kampung Tuang in Kota Samarahan as well as Siburan, Kampung Duranda Emas, Kampung Gundah, Batu 15 here.

Operations to evacuate affected residents are being prepared with Civil Defence beefing up their teams.

Other areas affected are villages like Kampung Maan, Sungai Riset, Kerumboi, Patung, Menjau, according to reliable sources.

Villages cut off due to impassable roads are Skuduk, Plaman Payang, Chupak, Sikog and Mundai.

Another reliable source reported that areas near the rivers in Batu Kawa like Kampung Rantau Panjang is stable and there is no instruction for residents to evacuate en masse except for members of four households whose homes has been inundated by water of more than three feet. They has been asked to move to higher ground for their safety’s sake. It was said that water level is receding.

Batu Kitang area is also said to be stable but water can be seen at various stretches of the roads. Hence the Civil Defence teams are getting ready to get people moving to the community hall nearby if need be.

Residents in Bengoh area like Kampung Bratan, Giam, Bawang and Semedang has also been alerted to get ready to move to safety when the need arises.

Areas in Tarat which may be affected if water level is not receding soon would be Kampung Maang, Sungai Riset, Kerumboi, Patung, Menjau and Teng Bukap, according to the source. The village clinic in Teng Bukap in particular has been inundated by water.

Tapah bazaar along Mile 22 in Jalan Kuching-Serian are also not spared as 25 houses nearby are affected by overflowing water from a nearby river.
