SIBU: The Drainage and Irrigation Department here is on high alert for floods as the rains continue.

Its engineer Ting Sing Kuong said they had reasons to be concerned, adding besides Sibu, it had been raining in the upper reaches of Rajang River which flows to this town.

“We have been watching the rain in Kapit and its surrounding areas too.

“Even without the official weather report, ordinary folks can also see water rushing down from upstream has become murkier and the river current is swift.

“These are already the tell-tale signs.”

Ting said their next concern was the king tide that was expected this week.

He therefore advised townsfolk to stay alert.

Though the water level in the river had not breached the flood alert level yet, he said his department was already on the ground around the clock in low-lying areas like Kampung Bahagia, Kampung Sentosa and Stabau.

According to the weather report, the situation here will remain wet for the next 10 days, with rain and thunderstorm forecast to occur daily.

It rained much of yesterday here, with the temperature at noon at a low of 25 degrees Celsius before it reached a high of 26 degrees from 1pm and dropping to 25 again at 3pm and further dropping to 24 degrees at 5pm.

It stayed at 23 degrees from 6pm before dropping to 22 degrees Celcius near midnight. The lowest night temperature for the next 10 days is forecast to be 22 degrees Celsius.
