KUCHING: The Flood Relief Committee is constantly monitoring the water level here as the state faces a possibility of flooding during the king tide which is expected to hit today until Jan 26.

Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said in the event of flood, the committee, which comprises various agencies such as the police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Department (JPAM) and State Welfare Department (JKM), will be ready to assist and evacuate victims to evacuation centres.

“I am told that presently there are several areas where water has risen to knee-level. We are monitoring the situation and on constant alert to evacuate victims to respective evacuation centres if necessary,” she told reporters after officiating the Kuching Ponggal Festival at Kuching Waterfront yesterday.

Fatimah also pointed out that dry rations will also be delivered to the victims through forward bases while immediate assistance will be provided to those who are at evacuation centres.

“We have volunteers from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the Red Crescent, Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) and PBB Women’s Wing ‘Skuad Sayang’ who are all on standby and ready to lend a helping hand to the victims,” she said.
