Warning on incorrect price labels

SANDAKAN: The government will not compromise in taking legal action against any supermarkets or shop operators who do not display the proper prices of their goods.

Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Haji Ahmad Ayid said her ministry, through the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperation and Consumerism (MDTCC), will take action if any operator is found to have committed the offence.

According to Jainab, a survey on prices of goods at a well-known hypermarket at Mile 6 here with the MDTCC found that several of the goods’ price labels showed different values when checked with a price scanner.

“The hypermarket should label their goods with the real prices as shown on the price scanner to avoid confusing the consumers.

“Therefore, the hypermarket had committed an offence under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act and will be further referred to the MDTCC,” she said.

Jainab also warned supermarket and shop operators not to arbitrarily increase their prices of goods in order to gain revenue.

Meanwhile, Jainab presented assistance to 30 students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Gum-Gum Sandakan who were affected by the recent flash flood.

All of the recipients received two pairs of school uniforms and shoes from the state government.

Besides that, Jainab also presented school uniforms, shoes and stationery to 676 students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Tinusa Jaya yesterday.
