KUCHING: As the flood situation in Sarawak continued to improve, only 3,071 flood victims from 866 families were still sheltering at 17 evacuation centres at 4pm yesterday.

This represented a drop of 3,907 from Wednesday. Statistics from the state National Security Council operations room also mentioned that 21 evacuation centres had already been closed.

In Kuching, the number of evacuation centres dropped to just one – at SK Beradek which provided shelter to 379 people from 111 families.

However, the evacuation centres in Mukah had increased to two, accommodating 83 people from 27 families.

In Samarahan, seven evacuation centres still provided shelter to 1,270 victims from 302 families.

The number of evacuation centres in Limbang was six, providing shelter to 1,216 victims from 389 families.

Meanwhile, a check with the Kuching Barrage at 10.30am yesterday confirmed the water level at the upstream to be normal at 6.1 metres.

However, with the king tide expected to be at its peak yesterday and today, a spokesperson from the barrage predicted the water level to reach 10.9 metres at around 7pm tonight.

As such, he said gates at the barrage would be closed to prevent sea water from flooding low-lying areas in Kuching.

On the other hand, Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu remained at ‘Code Orange Weather Alert’ yesterday.
