SMK St Elizabeth wins Chief Minister’s Special Award for excellence

SIBU: SMK St Elizabeth became the pride of Sibu when it grabbed the Chief Minister’s Special Award for Excellent Schools in secondary schools category.

Principal Clement Chieng said they received RM10,000 in cash, a plaque, and a certificate.

The award was given to the school for achieving a GPN average grade of 3.00 and below in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

Chieng said they achieved GPN of 2.80 in 2013 SPM, which meant all students who sat for the examination that year had scored A on average.

“The award is also a recognition of our constant improvement in both the SPM and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) for the last three years.

The school scored an average grade (GPS) of 2.02 in 2011, 1.94 in 2012 and 2.00 in 2013 at PMR level.

Their SPM level’s scores also saw a constant improvement of 3.17 in 2011, 3.04 in 2012 and 2.80 in 2013, Chieng told reporters before handing over the award to SMK St Elizabeth School Board member and Sibu Catholic Mission Schools Redevelopment Committee chairman Temenggong Vincent Lau at the latter’s office in Market Road here yesterday.

The event also celebrated the school’s success with SMK St Elizabeth Old Students’ Association chairperson Teresa Lau and parent-teacher association deputy chairman James Tiong.

Chieng said he received the award from Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem at a function held in Kuching on Jan 19, adding that the school had in fact also achieved remarkable result in co-curricular activities at both national and international level.

In 2011, they won the five-star national-level Smart School Qualification Standard (SSQS) award plus the Anugerah Putra Pengguna’ under the national-level School Consumer Club Interactive Consumer Challenge.

Chieng was also proud that, in 2012, his students Cynthia Li Ying and Rachel Hii Kao Yii clinched gold medals in ‘Sarawak Taekwondo Championship’ and in the ‘10th Hongkong Wushu International (Taiji Sword)’ competition respectively.
