MIRI: The Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations of Sarawak plans to make two new attempts into the Malaysia Book of Records this year.

According to president Hii Teck Yun, the feat would be made in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Miri attaining its city status.

“To date, we have already created three new records for the books; namely flying the most number of Kung Ming lanterns, writing the most number of the character ‘ma’ (horse)on a calligraphy and creating the largest Jalur Gemilang using 20 sen coins.

“We are eyeing two more records this year to commemorate the celebration of Miri city status, but the details would only be made known later,” he said after a courtesy call on Miri City Council (MCC) Mayor Lawrence Lai recently.

Lai, in response, welcomed the challenge, noting that 13 records of various kinds had been created by MCC and local associations here so far.

“The council welcomes the attempts and gives its fullest support towards such efforts, which indirectly help us promote Miri tourism.”

The courtesy call by Hii and his entourage was to invite Lai for the federation’s Chinese New Year Dinner this Feb 28 at Meritz Hotel here.

Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Ragad Kurdi Taib, as well as Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu are expected to attend as guests-of-honour.
