Stop dumping wastes into drains — Talib

BINTULU: Indiscriminate dumping of wastes into drains should stop because that is one factor behind flash flood.

Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip said, during an inspection he carried out recently in a few places, he saw lots of rubbish blocking water flow in drains.

He urged people to rid themselves of that littering habit so that they would not suffer the consequence of their own doing.

Talib said this when met after officiating at the Tree Planting 2015 ceremony jointly organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia and Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan at UPMKB forest conservation area on Saturday.

He said some people blasted the local authority for failing to effectively deal with the recurrence of flash flood but they did not seem to realise that the problem had actually originated from the people’s own attitude.

Talib, meanwhile, also advised developers and contractors to be more responsible by ensuring the drainage system in their project areas were clear of any debris to allow smooth flow of water. He said many flash floods in Bintulu had been caused by blocked drainage, although some flash flood could be due to high tides.

Bintulu Development Authority, said Talip, had deepened and widened drains in an effort to reduce incidences of flooding. around town.
