KUCHING: The India Street Pedestrian Mall upgrading project costing around RM4.3 million is expected to be completed by June.

It will include polycarbonate and aluminium louvre roofing with a contemporary design that still preserves the area’s historical value.

During the site inspection yesterday, Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said traders and shoppers would benefit from the roofing which is fireproof, allows for ventilation and natural light.

“The rainwater collecting system will be built to promote recycling and green technology,” he said.

Funding for the project is equally borne by the traders and the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), which has set up a committee to manage the street.

Meanwhile, DBKU urged residents to report acts of vandalism by taking photos so that action could be taken.

DBKU incurred losses of around RM40,000 last year as a result of repairing or replacing damaged public facilities.

Abang Wahap pointed out that the money could have been used for better purposes.

He said DBKU would also reward members of the public who track and catch vandals.

“We’ve given away a bicycle to the people who caught a drainage cap thief,” he added.
