SIBU: Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee wants the authorities to immediately act on their flood mitigation plan to tackle the perennial flooding besetting some villages here.

He said yesterday Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku; Kampung Jeriah, Oya; and Kampung Sentosa, Salim residents were fed up with studies or proposals to address flooding problem that had yet to be implemented .

“It is very frustrating to them as the stagnant water is causing great inconvenience to them, disrupting their daily activities, including children unable to attend school.

“The roads in these places are inundated not only during monsoon season but every time when there is a heavy downpour.

“I understand that Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Public Works Department are coming up with a plan within a week to iron out the problem which has been dragging on for many years.

“So, no more talk from now as I want to see them coming up with drastic action to solve the flooding woe in these three villages once and for all, “ said Dr Annuar,

He added that he had visited all the three villages and had raised the flooding issue many times in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting.

He also urged the authorities to monitor the development taking place in and around the three villages.

“Drainage system must be properly done to avoid creating problems to nearby residents.

“The three villages are affected by nearby development. There was no such problem when there was no development there previously,” he noted.

He wanted developers to be more responsible, saying it was unfair to the villagers who had to put up flooding after a heavy downpour.
