SIBU: The local water authority has been urged to keep abreast of
new technologies in water supply system and apply them to Sarawak for optimum benefit to the community.

State Public Utilities Minister Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the government did not want a repeat of the water supply disruption that happened in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Long Lama.

“The children were forced to go without water for weeks. This should not have happened,” he said at the Sibu Water Board (SWB) annual dinner last night.

Awang Tengah who is also Resource Planning and Environment Minister, as well as Industrial Development Minister also urged the public not to pollute the rivers which are the state’s main water supply source.

Earlier, SWB manager Daniel Wong said in his address that Phase 1 of the Tanjung Manis water supply project was 52 per cent completed, which was two per cent ahead of schedule. -Bernama
