KENINGAU: Students’ misconduct is being monitored through the deployment of police officers in the schools as secondary school liaison officers, said Keningau police chief DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong.

Overall, he said, all the parties involved have cooperated to address the social problems among school students.

“The police have pledged to cooperate on matters involving misconduct of school students,” Douglas said during a session to introduce a school liaison officer at SMK Gunsanad here yesterday.

Police officers appointed as liaison officers will be the intermediary between the police and the school, and will only involve secondary schools in this area.

He said that one of the objectives of having meeting sessions involving senior police officers, the district education officer and secondary school principal is to enhance the close cooperation with the police.

“Establishing close cooperation between the police and education officials and the school would help to address the social problems in schools,”he said.

Other discussions during the briefing sessions involved students’involvement in crime, drug abuse and traffic offence.

In addition, Douglas said the dialogue session also proposed for the creation of Crime Prevention Clubs in schools, activating the Police Cadet Corps and joint programs of police and school management in schools.

“I am optimistic that this effort will run smoothly and hoped with the deployment of liaison officers in schools, social issues in schools can be prevented,” he said.

Also present were assistant district education officer Haliman Narion, senior police officers, officers from the district education office, principals and representatives of principals of secondary schools in the district.
