MIRI: Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Malaysia shares the joy of its parent Curtin University of Western Australia being named among the top 10 of 100 ‘Most International’ tertiary institutions in the world.

The performance ranking of universities by Times Higher Education (THE) is based on the international outlook indicators under its flagship ‘World University Ranking 2014/15’ survey.

Curtin Sarawak’s pro vice-chancellor Prof Jim Mienczakowski said the ranking was a major recognition for the varsity here, which is Curtin’s largest international campus.

“It means that Curtin’s efforts in providing world-class education, services and opportunities to local and international students have been recognised globally,” he said.

Meanwhile Curtin University’s vice-chancellor Prof Deborah Terry said the ranking demonstrated the university’s ability to attract students from around the globe as well as to collaborate with international colleagues.

“Curtin has the third largest international student population of any Australian university, with campuses across Western Australia, Sydney, Singapore and Sarawak.”

Curtin has joined the group of 10 ‘most international’ universities in the world together with the Australian National University, as well as other institutions from Austria, France, England and Singapore. The top three ‘most international universities’ are from Switzerland.

THE World Ranking is the only global university performance table to judge world-class institutions across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The next ranking will be released late this year.

Last year, Curtin significantly improved its rankings in another highly-regarded system, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Centre for World-Class Universities.

Currently, Curtin is placed 303rd within the 301-400 band, up from the 401-500 band in 2013. It was one of only 19 Australian universities ranked last year, and is placed equal 10th nationally.

Terry was delighted by this improvement.

“The ARWU is widely recognised as the most relevant research-oriented global university ranking system, and this is the sixth consecutive year that Curtin has been featured.”
