KUCHING: The police are aiming for a five per cent reduction in the number of accident cases during this festive season under the latest series of ‘Op Selamat’.

Officially launched yesterday in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year celebration, Op Selamat 6/2015 started on February 12 and will last until February 26.

According to Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Burhanuddin Abdul Majid, the focus of the operation will be on road safety as well as home security.

“This operation will be implemented based on total enforcement, as road safety advocacy and awareness did not have much impact on road users.

“We hope road users will give their full cooperation and abide by road rules and regulations.

“Since the start of the operation on February 12, there have been a total of 139 cases of vehicle breakdown or damage while on the road and two fatal accident cases. Our target for this operation is to reduce the number of accident cases by five per cent compared to previous operations.

“In addition, we will also focus on home security, especially those that will be left vacant during the holiday season.

“Besides ensuring their houses are locked up and installed with alarm systems, we urge the public to cooperate with us and inform the nearest police station of when and how long they will be away from home, so that the police can step up patrol in their area,” he said prior to launching Op Selamat 6/2015 at Plaza Merdeka yesterday.

He was representing State Police Commissioner Dato Sri Muhammad Sabtu Osman at the event. Others present included State Police Management chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dato Mohd Jasmani Yusoff, State Public Order and Traffic chief Supt Mohd Sarie Fauzi, other department heads and community leaders.

The operation is part of integrated efforts between the police and other enforcement agencies as well as the public to reduce commuting accidents, particularly on the road, and prevent crime.

A total of 750 personnel will be working throughout the state during the operation.

House owners who want to inform the police of their holiday plan can sign up as Rakan Cop member via SMS by sending POLISSWK (space) DAFTAR (space) name to 32728. After they are signed up as Rakan Cop member, they will have to SMS POLISSWK (space) BK, address, time away to the same number.
