KUCHING: The National Sports Institute (ISN) will be take a more proactive role in the state by working closely with the Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) and the state government especially in developing sports at the grassroots level.

Minister of Sports Datuk Khairy Jamaluddin had recently announced the new sports management structure in Malaysia with emphasis on the roles of the Malaysia Sports Council (MSN) and National Sports Institute (ISN).

The first-ever special taskforce has also been set up in Sarawak to oversee the implementation of their Strategic Planning for 2015 to 2025.

“At the moment, we (ISN) will be visiting all the states to introduce the new changes as announced by the sports minister and identify areas which needs improvements especially in grassroots development,” Dato Danyal Balagopal Abdullah of ISN Board of directors said after a dialogue session with deputy state secretary Datu Misnu Taha at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

The scenario in Sarawak, he noted, will be more challenging due to the size and scattered population, leading to the formation of the special taskforce which will engage MSNS, Sarawak Sports Corporation and the state government.

Meanwhile, ISN vice chief executive officer Ramesh Chandar Kunjuni said an ISN satellite centre will be set up in Sibu in addition to the existing ones in Kuching and Miri.

Sarawak Youth and Sports Department (JBS) representatives also participated in the dialogue session on the 10-year Strategic Plan which includes sports medicine, sports science and sports technology.
