KUCHING: SMK Batu Lintang here can expect to gain excellent overall performance in last year’s STPM, if the results announced yesterday is anything to go by.

As at yesterday, it recorded 15 students having attained straight As.

Principal Saftuyah Adenan, however, said the school would have to wait in getting complete results as the present STPM examination system allows for re-sitting.

“There were 126 candidates for 2014. The results that we have so far are for the 56 students sitting for STPM in the first and second sitting. Results for the third sitting will only be known by April.

“Still, there are 15 candidates out of the 56 who scored straight As — a level much higher than the previous year, which recorded nine students with straight As,” she told reporters at SMK Batu Lintang hall around noon yesterday.

Saftuyah believed that the number of straight-A students might increase once all the results came in.

“We expect to see more (straight-A students) when the results for the third sitting are out. Based on current statistics, our school has achieved about 99.2 per cent in passing rate,” she pointed out.

One of 15 candidates, Denedy Wong Siong Yong, obtained 5A — placing him among the top STPM achievers nationwide. The additional subject that he took was Physics, which he studied entirely by himself. Denedy is already in Kuala Lumpur to pursue tertiary education.

Other achievers are Eileen Ng Suk Ying, Teh Yih Zhi, Tiew Soo Wei, Liew Sze Chen, Doris Tang Ying Ying and Elsie Pui who scored 4A; while Kong Chee Chung, Lai Cong Yan, Leong Yong Sheng, Christina Ngiau Yi Min, Mohd Azri Suhaimi, Joyce Tiew Shy Yian all got 3A, 1A-.

Bong Yu Feng and Francis Chang, on the other hand, attained 2A, 2A- and 1A, 3A-, respectively.

In addition, four students obtained 3A – March Leong Khee Hin (3A, 1B+), Chong Jee Jun (2A, 1A-, 1B+), Chuan Ngee Teck (2A, 1A-, 1B+) and Dayangku Aisah Awang Taha (2A, 1A-, 1B).

Notably, March and Dayangku Aisah were among five disabled students who sat for STPM at
SMK Batu Lintang last year. All five passed the examinations and are currently pursuing their studies elsewhere.

Eileen, when met, appeared elated upon having scored As for General Paper, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.

“The Biology paper was tough – I had to re-sit it once. I’m happy to have passed all papers. To me, the most important thing is to pay attention in class, do lots of exercises and never be shy to ask questions.

“I’m going to work part-time while planning to further my studies. Although I’m still exploring the options, I’m considering either Food Science or Nutrition,” she said.

For Mohd Azri, who took General Paper, Bahasa Malaysia, History and Commerce, his results were beyond his own expectations.

“I think it is important for students to constantly do revisions on subjects that they are weak in. I did not do very well in History, so I focused more on it.

“I’m planning to further my studies at Upsi (Sultan Idris University of Education). I want to be a teacher someday,” he enthused.
