MIRI: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) needs to work out the issue of overlapping seat claims in the state.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Azmin Ali said there is a need for discussion among the parties in the opposition alliance, particularly between PKR and the Democratic Action Party (DAP).

“We need to emphasise on our common policy framework among all PR alliance parties,” he told a press conference after attending the PKR Chinese New Year celebration here on Monday.

The Selangor Menteri Besar claimed PKR and DAP leaders will be able to solve the matter in time for the state election due by the middle of next year.

“If possible we want to solve it early so as to start our work on the ground immediately,” he added.

Last October, the state DAP said it would cease all communication with PKR and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) but would still remain in PR.

State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the party would distance itself from PR activities until PAS and PKR made clear their stand on hudud law.

He also indicated that the state DAP would leave PR if PAS’ pro-hudud ulama group assumed power after the party’s elections in June.

In November, no DAP representative attended the state PR’s meeting to discuss the division of seats for the 11th state election.

However, DAP Sarawak secretary Alan Ling was present at the PKR Chinese New Year event hosted by PKR Miri chief Dr Michael Teo, who is Miri Member of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Azmin said he was satisfied with PKR preparations at branch and state level for the upcoming state election.

“We are more than ready to face the election anytime,” he said.

According to him, PKR and other parties under PR will gain more ground compared to the previous state election.

“This is based on the current issues that have been made known to the public and it is an opportunity for us to win more votes,” he claimed.

Azmin later launched the PKR Senadin election machinery.
